Kochi-Jo Castle
A scene of Sunday Market
|
Kochi-Jo Castle was constructed
400 years ago after the Battle of Sekigahara which marked the beginning
of the Edo Period. From the castle's wooden keep, enjoy a panoramic
view of Kochi City, especially impressive with cherry blossoms in
spring and with colored leaves in autumn.
On Sundays, an outdoor market comes to life along the longer than
1km Otesuji Street, beginning at the front gate of the castle. The
Sunday market in Kochi has a history of 300 years. It's a popular
tourist spot for strolling and shopping, and a place where one can
find interesting curios and taste unique local foods.

Kazutoyo Yamauchi, the feudal lord of the castle of Tosa
(previous name for Kochi Prefecture), and his wife, Chiyo,
lived here.
Now, she is more famous than her husband because she is
to be the heroine in the popular samurai drama series
scheduled to be aired in 2006 on public broadcaster NHK.
