Omishima is located in
the middle section of "Shimanami-kaido" or "The Coastal
Road", which connects Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture and Hiroshima
Prefecture. Oyamazumi Shrine and the National Treasure Hall are located on this island. Oyamazumi Shrine is famous for the guardian deity of mountains and marine transportation. Omishima boasts the highest number of weapons designated as national treasures or important cultural properties, and the National Treasure Hall is regarded as the number one in Japan for these collections. In addition, there are many tourist attractions, including Omishima Museum of Art established by the town. This museum has collections of modern Japanese paintings.
