Omishima is located in
the middle section of "Shimanami-kaido" or "The Coastal
Road", which connects Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture and Hiroshima
Prefecture.
Oyamazumi Shrine and the National Treasure Hall are located on this
island.
Oyamazumi Shrine is famous for the guardian deity of mountains and
marine transportation. Omishima boasts the highest number of weapons
designated as national treasures or important cultural properties,
and the National Treasure Hall is regarded as the number one in Japan
for these collections.
In addition, there are many tourist attractions, including Omishima
Museum of Art established by the town. This museum has collections
of modern Japanese paintings. Cultivation of citrus fruits such as
tangerines is actively pursued, and the island is also noted for delicious
foods.
Places of interest all around the island can be visited by rental
bicycle.
While cycling, enjoy the views and take in the fragrance of the breeze
from the sea. You will experience a wonderful time. Sightseeing by
rental bicycle is a must for anyone visiting Omishima.
Another highlight of Omishima is Tatara Bridge, connecting Omishima
and Ikuchishima. An elegant bridge which looks as if a crane were
spreading its wings, it is the greatest cable-stayed bridge in the
world.
